In all the years she had known him, she'd never seen him with a date, she realized with a start. He was always in the background with his statistical data, engineering the senator and his family this way and that. But those times—at her father's office, at political events, or at strategy meetings at the Lipton houses—weren't social occasions.
Justin Marks had been present in his professional capacity, in his eternal gray suit and white shirt.
The Liptons didn't socialize with the senator's AA.
Stacey found herself wondering what sort of woman appealed to Justin. What if he had
appeared at some Lipton-related event with a beautiful blonde in tow? She felt a peculiar churning in her stomach that was entirely unrelated to Baby X's presence.
Justin was clearly uncomfortable with the subject. "There have been a few women over the years."
He shrugged. "But nothing that lasted. There were no commitments."
She refused to speculate on why his answer so delighted her. "Because you're totally dedicated to your career?"
"Maybe I was waiting for you to grow up and notice me, Stacey," he countered lightly.
"And if I believe that, you'll try to sell me beachfront property in Iowa."
He cast her a quick and undecipherable sidelong glance. "If we've dispensed with that topic, can we go back to the subject of dinner tonight? The dinner we're having together?"
"You're very persistent," she said irritably.
"I certainly am. Persistence is the hallmark of anyone in politics. Now, where shall we eat?"
She heaved an exasperated sigh. He obviously wasn't going to accept graciously her refusal. And she was too tired to keep sparring with him. "Oh, all right," she grumbled with ill grace. "I'll have dinner with you. But that's all, Justin! I'm not going to bed with you," she added fiercely, her cheeks warm.
Justin made no reply. But Stacey didn't miss the pleased little smile that lit his face. And though she tried hard to work up a protective anger, it was no use. She wasn't angry with Justin Marks for his insistence that she have dinner with him, nor for the high-handed way he had spirited her to the doctor. And that smile on his face touched her in a way that she didn't dare define.
